We hope the second half of the school year is going well and you are excited about all that it has to offer. Here at GCSN we are continuing to focus on how we can support ākonga to access digital fluency and citizenship learning in new and exciting ways.


The Top of the Pods podcasting competition is just around the corner and presents an exciting opportunity for anybody interested in learning about podcasting, telling their story or refining their skills. Read on to learn about how to get involved and access support from podcasting experts for your tamariki and ākonga!

Top of the Pods



Calling all aspiring podcasters and ākonga with untold stories! 

 

GCSN, Christchurch City Libraries, Plains FM, and LOOP (Papanui Youth Development Trust) are excited to present Top of the Pods. A podcasting competition where teams of tamariki create a unique <20 minute podcast with free support to learn new podcasting skills and win amazing prizes, including brand new podcasting equipment!

We have amazing prizes up for grabs for teams in both the The Future is a Wonderful Place and Open categories. 


First prize: Up to $500 of podcasting equipment for your school! 

Specialist equipment based on your schools' needs, OR a podcasting setup for your school. 


Second prize: A T-shirt making masterclass 

One two-hour session for your team with all the materials to design and print a set of commemorative Top of the Pods T-shirts! 


Third prize: Lucky dip!

Pool passes, books, drink bottles and more... 


Every team's success will be recognised at our prizegiving and showcase event on Wednesday 23 October (5:30pm - 7:00pm) at TSB Space, Tūranga Library and there will also be special prizes for standout teams! 


Podcasting learning opportunities

As part of Top of the Pods, all teams have an opportunity to access learning opportunities to refine or learn new podcasting skills to help them elevate their podcast entry. LOOP are offering 1:1 support sessions for teams about specific aspects of the podcasting process and Christchurch City Libraries are delivering a series of structured open days about specific parts of the podcasting process. 1:1 team support

LOOP (Papanui Youth Development Trust) will be providing 1:1 support for teams wanting guidance about a specific part of the podcasting process. 

Each session will be 2 hours and take place between 9 September and 4 October. Sessions can be scheduled for: 

  • Monday (afternoons) 

  • Tuesday (afternoons) 

  • Friday (any time)  

Open Days

Christchurch City Libraries are delivering a series of open days focused on specific aspects of the podcasting process. Each session will be delivered at Matatiki Hornby Centre (Tuesday afternoons) and Tūranga Library (Thursday mornings). 

  • Week 1 (10 & 12 September): Planning and script writing  

  • Week 2 (17 & 19 September): Recording 

  • Week 3 (24 & 26 September): Editing  

  • Week 4 (1 & 3 October): Open  

GCSN Podcasting Kit


To support teams to create amazing podcast entries for Top of the Pods, GCSN has recently purchased a brand new podcasting kit!


This is available to be loaned (free of charge) by any schools with teams wanting to participate who might not have suitable equipment at school. You are able to borrow it for a week or so to record content for your competition podcast entry. The kit includes: 

  • A ZOOM PodTrak 4 podcaster

  • 2x Microphones

  • 2x Headphones

  • 2x Microphone stands 

  • The necessary cables 

  • An SD card to store audio recordings

  • A visual how-to guide to help you get started
