Video Conferencing - The Effects of Climate Change

Who was Involved?

What did you do?

On May 4th at the South Learning Centre in Christchurch, students from Shirley Intermediate and Linwood College had the privilege of being part of an International Video Conference on Climate Change. The scope and depth of the theme was initially a little overwhelming for the students, but they soon found their grasp. From Alaska to Guatemala , the stories shared all resonated with the students in different ways.

Learning for Students and Teachers

First person accounts from different communities, all sharing the real effects of climate change, were the most captivating. The ability of our students to understand real world issues such as Climate Change, in context, is perhaps one of the greatest challenges of teachers today. But through this VC experience, I saw first hand how a greater access to different voices can in fact provide the backbone to a greater understanding of the important issues of today. In addition, empathy, awareness, and the appreciation of unique needs from around the world all contribute to a better learning experience for our students.
